Hindsight is 20/20

You know the phrase ‘hindsight is 20/20’? I believe that is the moment that God’s plan becomes clear to you – whether you took a step down the right or wrong path. I believe in those moments, God is revealing to you that he really exists and is taking an active role in your life. You may have ignored those red flags, but you can see them perfectly. You may not have understood why this was so difficult for so long, but now the doors are opening and you realize, you’re actually ready for what is next. But how often do we give him credit for what has happened? We chalk it up to a bunch of things – the universe, personal knowledge and growth, that “duh” moment…but rarely do we stop and praise God for what he has done; for what (or who) is making the hindsight 20/20.
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. – Ephesians 5:15-17
I’ve been exceptionally busy lately. It’s a trait I have to be very careful of, because it’s the enemy’s number one attack on me personally. The nature of my work ebbs and flows, and it requires a ton of focus to make sure I’m keeping my priorities straight. Luckily, God has been working on me with this particular trait for a while now, and while I certainly didn’t do it perfectly, I have thus far weathered the storm better than before. For once, rather than ignore God thru the chaos, I leaned into him – and, wow, how the experience changes when you take that posture.
I’ve mentioned before that I am a planner by nature. God’s favorite thing to do is change my plans. But since I was focused on my posture, and not my circumstances, I walked forward without knowing exactly what the next step was, and trusting him to work it out. And boy did he work it out. I’m now standing at the helm of the biggest thing to happen in my natural life, and I never would have walked myself there in my own power. So on one hand, I’m sorry I haven’t been attentive to writing, but on the other I’m not – because I was busy communing with God in my spare time, and he was busy making great things happen.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11
Most of us can at least paraphrase that scripture, but do we really understand and believe it? Do you truly believe in the depths of your heart that God has good plans for you? We spend so much time fighting for what we want, we often miss what God has in store for us.
I pray that you’ll have the faith of a child – unadulterated, unwavering, wholly trusting faith. God has great things in store for you; he wants you to be a part of his overall plan – but your focus has to move from yourself to his will, and you have to trust that he knows better than you do. Especially when you can’t see the end.
